Polished chrome hangs silver ends; gold and black posts both hang gold. The two are never mixed. The black post opens exactly the same palette of nine colours as gold.

Why choose the black post
A red rope on a gold post is two warm tones that have to agree with each other. The same rope on a black post is one colour and nothing else. That is the real reason to choose black: it takes no part in the palette, it carries it, and the colour decision gets made once instead of across two elements.
An evening changes register as it goes. The same pair of black posts holds the VIP entrance at seven and the cloakroom queue at one in the morning, without ever looking overdressed for one or underdressed for the other. The formality lives in the rope; change that and the post follows.
It is also the post for rooms kept deliberately dark — theatres, sound stages, dinners lit at the table. In a space designed to give no light back, a bright column becomes the lightest object in view, which is rarely the intention. Black lets the lighting do what it was set up to do.
